Analytic approach to the polarization of the cosmic microwave background in flat and open universes.

چکیده
We develop an analytic method and approximations to compute the polarization induced in the cosmic microwave background radiation on a wide range of angular scales by anisotropic Thomson scattering in presence of adiabatic scalar (energy-density) linear fluctuations. The formalism is an extension to the polarized case of the analytic approach recently developed by Hu and Sugiyama to evaluate the (unpolarized) temperature correlation function. The analytic approach helps to highlight the dependence of potentially measurable polarization properties of the cosmic microwave background radiation upon various parameters of the cosmological model. We show, for instance, that the ratio between the multipoles of the temperature and polarization correlation functions depends very sensitively upon the value of Ω0, the matter density in units of the critical, in an open universe. Integral Solution for the Microwave Background Anisotropies in Non-flat Universes
We present an efficient method to compute CMB anisotropies in non-flat universes. First we derive the Boltzmann equation for cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization fluctuations produced by scalar perturbations in a general Robertson-Walker universe. We then apply the integral method to solve this equation, writing temperature and polarization anisotropies as a time integral ov...
متن کاملCosmic Strings in a Universe with Non-critical Matter Density
In the light of recent work which suggests that structure formation by cosmic strings in a critical matter density universe require large biases, we discuss the effects of reducing the matter density. Using a full linear Einstein-Boltzmann solver, we compute the cold dark matter density field and the microwave background anisotropies/polarization in a flat universe with a non-zero cosmological ...
متن کاملCosmic Microwave Background in Closed Multiply Connected Universes
We have investigated the cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropy in closed multiply connected universes (flat and hyperbolic) with low matter density. We show that the COBE constraints on these low matter density models with non-trivial topology are less stringent since a large amount of CMB anisotropy on large angular scales can be produced due to the decay of the gravitational potential ...
متن کاملMosaicking with Cosmic Microwave Background Interferometers
Measurements of cosmic microwave background (CMB) anisotropies by interferometers offer several advantages over single-dish observations. The formalism for analyzing interferometer CMB data is well developed in the flat-sky approximation, which is valid for small fields of view. As the area of sky is increased to obtain finer spectral resolution, this approximation needs to be relaxed. We exten...
متن کاملAn Analytic Approach to the Polarization of the Cosmic Microwave Background Generated by Relic Gravitational Waves
We develop the Polnarev’s analytic method to calculate of the polarization power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background radiation (CMB) due to relic gravitational waves. This approach complements the more precise numerical results by providing insight into the physical origins of the features in the power spectrum. We make use of the WKB approach to handle the evolution of the relic gravit...
